Mozambique was hit by yet another disaster in February 2023, Cyclone Freddy and prior to that there was a Cholera outbreak in December 2022. Over 1 million people have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy and Cholera and about 1.4 million have been affected by natural disasters. Approximately 57000 have been displaced by the cyclone and flooding and remain in 33 shelters and about 385,930 people have been reached some assistance by humanitarian groups. Mozambique is facing alarming food insecurity with 3.15 million people experiencing sever scute food insecurity.

Despite receding flood waters, water contamination and disruption to water sanitation and hygiene services has led to sharp increase in cholera cases.

World Bank being committed to helping disaster affected countries getting back on its feet and this support will help Mozambique re-position roads, bridges, water supply systems, water sources, health units, medicines and medical equipment to help the population.

For this study the data was collected from World Bank that showed International Development Association (IDA) credits are public guaranteed debt extended by World Bank Group. IDA provides development credits, grants and guarantees to its recipient member countries to help meet their development needs and was a large dataset so SQL was the preferred choice for analysis that had information about the countries receiving the funding or aid that translates into Credit or Grants.

I created following queries to get to the with 30 columns showing information for the countries that were receiving funding and aid and it was 1.25 M rows and 30 columns that has data like Region, Country, Borrower, Credit Status, Project Names, Due to IDA , Repaid to IDA to name a few.

To begin with I wrote a query to identify all the columns

in the table and the number of records which confirmed the 1.25M rows and 30 columns stats

Next query tried to answer questions How much USD has IDA extended to rebuilding Countries all over the world ? This was answered with this following query leading to $19204389797562.3

And of that $334744147050.67

was extended for re-building

Mozambique

With so many natural disasters striking Mozambique, there are multiple projects underway so I tried to identify which top 10 projects the IDA extended funds to for development in Mozambique?

It was identified that Mozambique has water crisis that has led to number of problems like

  • 14.8 million people have no clean water

  • More than 21 million people are without safe place for toilet

  • Only half Mozambicans have access to improved water supply

  • There is a rise in waterborne diseases like Cholera and Diarrhea

Assessment of top 25 projects that were in Repaying Credit Status in period between 2010 - 2023 and it was observed projects in Energy and Development, Roads and Bridges, Health Services Delivery along with Municipal Development were the top performers in credit repaying status.

Improved economic conditions and sustained growth has led some projects to go into repaying phase.

Finally taking into consideration the amount of credit and aid the World Bank has extended it was found that

Still on the whole Original Principal Amount of $391 billion was given to Mozambique out of that $ 278 billion was disbursed amount, $8.363 billion was Cancelled debt and $223 billion remains borrowers obligation.

Although the data that was taken for the analysis of this study was from World Bank it was assessed for the most relevant time period from 2010-2023. This study points towards mixed economic outlook for Mozambique with its GDP growth increasing to 6.5%.

62% of the population lives in extreme poverty. Despite severe economic hardships Mozambique's is one of the smaller economies and currently ranked at 126, its prospects are promising with its growth expected to reach an average of 8% during 2023-2027 .

I hope you enjoy this case study on Word Banks grants and aids to help world's struggling economies get back on its feet and populations to thrive.
